Charles Overton Handley was a naturalist who worked for the U.S. National Museum. Handley was born on July 14, 1924, in Longview, Texas. The summer between high school and college he joined an expedition from the University of Michigan's Museum of Zoology to collect mammals in the Southern Appalachians. He received his bachelor's degree from Virginia Tech in 1944. He went on to earn his master's degree in 1947, and in 1955 a PhD in mammalogy at the University of Michigan. During his studies he c...
